My name is Randall Hodgkinson and I am running as the Libertarian candidate for United States Senate from Kansas. I became a candidate because I have been unsatisfied with our current representation in Congress on three major issues: (1) fiscal responsibility, (2) environmental sustainability, and (3) adherence to the Rule of Law. Our country should be a leader in these areas around the world. But under current leadership, the United States' debt has ballooned to FOURTEEN figures; the United States has not only failed to lead, but has impeded action to control global warming; and the United States has become a proponent of torture and human rights violations that we should work to eliminate in the world. It's time for new leadership in Congress.
The President and Congress have spent trillions of dollars on a counterproductive war in Iraq, leaving our economy much less able to absorb the current housing and energy crises. Pat Roberts and others in Congress have led this country to record deficits and ignored every prediction about impeding crises with Medicare and Social Security. Instead of keeping our national debt in check, the current Congress has engaged in spending without any sort of fiscal responsibility. Experts have told Congress over and over that our current entitlement programs are not sustainable and that the situation only gets worse as time goes on. But the current Congress has refused to address this problem. Again, responsible leaders address problems--they don't pass them along to the next generation. The time for action was yesterday, but Pat Roberts has failed to act responsibly.
I think this is a critical time for the world's environment. The United States should lead the world with regard to stewardship of the planet. But the U.S. Senate, through people like Pat Roberts, has been an obstacle to the United States taking any serious role in making sure that my children and their children have a livable sustainable world. The people of Kansas deserve leadership on this crucial issue, not a senator that is primarily protecting Big Oil and other special interests.
We must re-institute and protect the Rule of Law in this country and around the world. The current administration has not just whittled, but sometimes chopped away fundamental Constitutional protections. This administration has acted like it is above the law. And Pat Roberts has supported the administration at every cut. I am embarrassed that my country engages in illegal activities like torture and I have never heard Pat Roberts stand up to the administration to end such practices. Without scrupulous adherence to the Rule of Law, "Liberty" and "Justice" are just words. I believe they are the very precepts upon which this country is founded. And they are the very principles that distingjuish the United States among countries of the world. As a United States Senator, I will work every day in office to protect those fundamental guarantees.
In 2006, a new "major" party took control of Congress. Do you see a difference? If not, consider making a change away from the "major" parties to a candidate that will work for you. I am not beholden to any special interests or political party. I will spend every day in office working for the people of Kansas and the people of the United States.
